The United States Secretary of State called on the Venezuelan parties to begin negotiations for a peaceful transfer of power, promising them support.
The United States considers the winner of the presidential election in Venezuela to be the candidate from the united opposition, Edmundo Gonzalez, and not the current President Nicolas Maduro. This was stated by the Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, the press service of the State Department reports.
“Unfortunately, the processing of votes and the announcement of results by the Maduro-controlled National Electoral Council (CNE) are deeply flawed, resulting in announced results that do not reflect the will of the people of Venezuela,” he said.
Venezuela’s National Electoral Council, despite calls from the opposition and many foreign countries, still has not published the detailed results of the July 28 election.
“Meanwhile, the democratic opposition released more than 80% of the protocols received directly from the polling stations throughout Venezuela. These protocols show that Edmund Gonzalez Urrutia received the majority of votes in the election this one, winning by an insurmountable margin,” Blinken said.
The US Secretary of State added that both foreign observer evidence and exit poll data point to Gonzalez’s victory.
At the same time, Blinken did not directly name Gonzalez as the president of Venezuela, but congratulated him on his successful campaign and called on the Venezuelan parties to start negotiations for a peaceful transfer of power, promising them support from United States and its allies.
Recall that on July 29, incumbent President Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner of the elections with 51% of the vote compared to 44% for opposition leader Edmund Gonzalez.
Opposition parties say their candidate won 70% of the vote. Latin American leaders also doubt the integrity of Maduro’s victory. After the announcement of the results of the presidential election, mass protests began in the country.
