The German head of state recalled that the imperialism and racism of the National Socialists led to “heinous crimes”, which were opposed by the participants of the Warsaw Uprising.
On the eve of the 80th anniversary of the start of the Warsaw Uprising, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier asked Poles for forgiveness for National Socialist crimes during World War II. DW wrote this on Thursday, August 1.
“I am asking – now and here – for forgiveness,” Steinmeier told survivors of the uprising at a memorial event in the central square of the Polish capital with the participation of Polish President Andrzej Duda.
The German head of state recalled that the imperialism and racism of the National Socialists led to “horrible crimes”, which the participants of the uprising opposed. It is necessary to learn lessons from the past for the future, the German president said.
The Warsaw Uprising began on August 1, 1944. It was organized by order of the underground Home Army and representatives of the Polish government in exile.
The uprising lasted 63 days and was suppressed on October 2. In two months of brutal fighting, about 200 thousand people died, most of them civilians, and Warsaw was almost completely destroyed.
Let’s recall that earlier the leader of the Polish PiS party, Kaczynski, expressed his intention to start negotiations with Germany on the payment of reparations to his country for losses in World War II. We are talking about the amount of 1.3 trillion euros.
