Now only watermelons grown on the sandy soils of the Tauride region in the territory of Skadovsk, Kherson, and Kakhovka districts of the Kherson region can be called this, the Ministry of Economy reported.
A real Kherson watermelon has a high sugar content, dense flesh from pink to deep red and green skin with pale green stripes.
The Ukrainian National Office of Intellectual Property and Innovation (IP Office) has registered a new geographical indication (GI) – Kherson watermelon. It will be given to melons grown on sandy soils of the Tauride region in the territory of Skadovsky, Khersonsky, Kakhovka districts of the Kherson region, the Ministry of Economy reported.
Kherson watermelon is characterized by a high level of sugar, dense pulp. The skin of the watermelon is green with pale green stripes, the pulp is from pink to deep red. Such watermelon is very crispy and tasty. The status of geographical indication increases the competitiveness of producers.
Other Ukrainian geographical indications include “Melitopol cherry”, “Petrykivska painting”, “Transcarpathian wine”, and “Hutsul bryndzya”.
