This status gives producers additional advantages, increasing their competitiveness in domestic and international markets.
The Ukrainian National Office of Intellectual Property and Innovation has registered a new geographical indication – Kherson watermelon. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Economy on Wednesday, July 31.
It will be worn by melons grown in the sandy soils of the Tauride region in the Skadovsky, Kherson, Kakhovsky districts of the Kherson region.
“The registration of the Kherson watermelon as a geographical indication is an important event for our agricultural sector. The watermelon, grown in the sandy soils of the Tauride region, has been recognized for its uniqueness and has become a symbol of stability and dedication of Ukrainian farmers, working even in the difficult conditions of the war,” said Deputy Economy Minister Vitaly Kondratov.
This status gives producers additional benefits, increasing their competitiveness in domestic and international markets. Local communities will receive additional tax revenue, which will contribute to economic development in the region. For consumers, this is a guarantee of high quality and safety.
An application for the registration of a geographical indication was submitted by the public union “Association of Watermelon Producers of Kherson”, whose representatives are now defending their native land from the Russian invaders at the front.
We reported that in Kherson, in the central market, a watermelon grew on the asphalt. A video appeared on the Internet.
Let’s remember that before the full invasion of the Russian Federation, the Kherson region grew 35-40% of the total value of melons in Ukraine.
