Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli attack on his residence in Tehran on the morning of July 31. His bodyguard was killed along with him. Haniyeh arrived in Iran to attend the inauguration of the country’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian. This was announced by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the Iranian Mehr agency reports.
The IRGC noted that the official’s death is already being investigated. The results are promised to be announced later. Hamas considers the assassination attempt on one of its leaders a “serious escalation.”
Israel has not responded to Haniyeh’s death. The Israeli military has already told CNN that it “does not respond to foreign media reports.”
As is well known, Ismail Haniyeh led Hamas’ political operations and headed the movement’s politburo. He also played a central role in Hamas’s negotiations, in particular on the ceasefire with Israel.
The International Criminal Court accuses Haniyeh of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Israel and the Gaza Strip.
Recall that on July 30, the Israel Defense Forces carried out an airstrike on the Lebanese capital Beirut. The strike was aimed at eliminating senior Hezbollah member Fuad Shukr, who was responsible for the children killed in a missile strike in Majdal Shams.
