Journalists note that the Russians are building a naval base in the occupied Georgian town of Ochamchire.
The “President” of Russian-occupied Abkhazia (a region of Georgia) announced in October 2023 the construction of a new naval base for the needs of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Recent satellite images show significant construction progress. This was said by a group of journalists investigating Bellingcat.
Russia has never officially announced anything about the construction of a new Black Sea Fleet base in the occupied town of Ochamchira, but, according to experts, this base will be of strategic importance for Russia because it is quite far from Ukraine.
Analysis shows that many structures and perimeter elements are under construction at Ochamchira Harbour. Satellite images dated July 22 show several new foundations, land being cleared for development, and a new perimeter that significantly expands the base’s footprint.
A new perimeter road has been cleared around the eastern side of the base between the base and the city of Ochamchiri.
“There is little information about Russia’s plans for the Ochamchira naval base. While satellite imagery shows that expansion of the base continues, it remains unclear what the purpose of the new structures will be, what Russia’s long-term goals are for the base. and how it will affect its strategic position in the Chernoye sea,” Bellingcat added.
As we have already written, according to the US State Department, the Russian Federation is involving Georgia in the war against Ukraine, which is planning to build a naval base in the occupied Abkhazia.
