The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy is working to return a number of historical and religious monuments to state control. Among them are the Holy Dormition Pochayiv and Svyatogorsk Lavras, which are still used by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church MP. Acting Minister of Culture Rostislav Karandeyev stated this in an interview with Ukrinform.
According to him, the Ministry of Culture wants to cleanse the cultural space not only of imperial, but also religious narratives. They also plan to return all monuments of the national architectural and historical reserve “Ancient Chernihiv” to state control, some of which were also actively used by the diocese of the UOC MP.
Karandeyev emphasized that non-compliance with storage conditions, distortion of objects and even buildings were recorded. In particular, the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral in Chernigov was used sloppily. The authorities had to carry out huge work to restore the interior decoration, frescoes, etc.
As is known, the Holy Dormition Svyatogorsk Lavra in Donetsk Oblast is subordinate to the Kyiv Diocese of the UOC MP. All churches, chalk caves and other buildings are the property of the monastery. The Russian Patriarchate received the status of a Lavra, as well as the rights to property, in 2004.
The Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra in the Ternopil region has been owned by the Moscow Patriarchate since 2003, when the government of Viktor Yanukovych transferred it for free use for 49 years.
Let us recall that on July 27, the Ministry of Culture reported that the UOC MP had been making repairs, building extensions, changing structures, and restoring monuments in the Pochayiv Lavra without permission, without having the appropriate permits. In addition, a significant number of icons had disappeared from the Lavra.
