According to the electoral commission, after 80% of the ballots were processed, Maduro received 51.2% of the vote, while opposition candidate Edmund Gonzalez received 44%.
The Venezuelan opposition has declared victory in the presidential election, and also pointed to voting irregularities. Maduro himself says his victory is a “victory for peace and justice,” although shortly before the election he said the country would face a “bloodbath” if he lost.
Polls before the election showed a big advantage for González over Maduro, who has ruled for 11 years and under whom Venezuela’s economy has fallen into disrepair.
The opposition expressed confidence that the results of this presidential election, like in the previous 2018 elections, were rigged. Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who was banned from running by the authorities and replaced by Edmundo González, published an appeal to the army in X.
However, the army has always supported Nicolás Maduro, and before this election there was no sign that the military’s top brass were planning to abandon the president.
Maduro came to power in March 2013, with Venezuela in deep economic crisis. He has repeatedly backed Russia in its war against Ukraine.
