The Venezuelan opposition is confident that the results of the presidential elections were rigged.
The President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, was re-elected for a third term following the results of the elections held in the country. This was reported by CNN on Monday, July 29.
With 80% of the votes counted, Maduro won more than 51% of the vote, ahead of Democratic Unitary Platform candidate Edmund Gonzalez Urrutia, who received more than 44%.
After the announcement of the results, Maduro emphasized that his victory was “a victory of peace and stability.”
The opposition is confident that the election results were rigged. “The result cannot be hidden. The country chose change peacefully,” Gonzalez said after the vote.
Maduro will serve a third consecutive six-year term as Venezuela’s president, continuing the rule of Chavismo that began in 1999 under former President Hugo Chavez. Maduro has been in power since Chavez’s death in 2013.
It will be recalled that in January, 32 people were arrested in Venezuela, including military and civilians, for possible participation in a conspiracy to kill Maduro.
In March, Maduro accused opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez and former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe of plotting to disrupt the presidential election.
