The Russian military built a new base in May 2024 in the city of Novocherkassk near Rostov-on-Don, 200 km from the front line. This is confirmed by satellite images from Planet Labs, accessed by a Radio Liberty project called Schemes.
The Russian army assigned a new military base between the correctional colony and two unfinished general educational institutions, on the site of another abandoned military facility – Cook School No. 195 of the Russian Civil Defense Forces, which was closed in 2011.
Last summer, after twelve years of calm, changes began in the abandoned territory of the former military school, journalists note.
The first military equipment appeared here at the end of August 2023. Then about fifty military trucks were parked on the territory of the facility and a dozen tents were erected. The base tripled in about a year.
