This was stated in his video message distributed by the International Olympic Committee.
This message will also be broadcast at the opening ceremony of the Olympics.
In it, Guterres noted the “power of sport,” which he said could “bring hope” and “bring people together.” He stressed that these ideals, which underpin the Olympic Movement and the Olympic Games, are “also the ideals of the United Nations.”
In the spirit of the Olympic Truce, I call on everyone to lay down their arms. Build bridges. Foster solidarity. And strive for the ultimate goal: peace for all, he stressed.
Let us recall that in April, French President Emmanuel Macron put forward the idea of a global ceasefire for the duration of the Olympic Games.
