Harris has received at least 2,668 delegates’ support, and 1,976 votes from fellow party members are needed to approve her candidacy in the first round.
Kamala Harris herself spoke to the campaign headquarters and called the Democratic election campaign a “roller coaster” and admitted that she has mixed emotions about Biden’s withdrawal from the race.
The Associated Press cites data showing that at least 2,579 delegates have expressed their support for her. CNN does not provide an exact number of delegates, but indicates that there are many more than in 1976. The channel made its calculations based on public statements of support for Harris and conversations with delegates.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison said Democrats will choose their presidential candidate through online voting by August 7. The exact date has not yet been set.
Harris set a presidential fundraising record in just 24 hours, raising more than $80 million in the first 24 hours after Joe Biden dropped out of the campaign and endorsed her as the Democratic nominee.
