This is stated in a statement published today, July 22, by the press service of the EU Council.
It is noted that European sanctions against Russia were first introduced in 2014, and since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the EU has already adopted 14 unprecedented sanctions packages.
Currently, sanctions consist of a wide range of measures, including:
- restrictions on trade, finance, technology and dual-use goods, industry, transport and luxury goods;
- a ban on the import or transfer of marine crude oil and certain petroleum products from Russia to the EU;
- “deswiftization” of several Russian banks;
- suspension of broadcasting and broadcasting licenses in the EU for several Kremlin-backed disinformation outlets;
- The measures are aimed at countering the circumvention of sanctions.
As long as the Russian Federation’s illegal actions continue to violate the prohibition on the use of force, which constitutes a serious breach of its obligations under international law, it is appropriate to maintain all measures introduced by the EU and to take additional measures if necessary, the EU Council notes.
