European Union foreign ministers will examine how to respond to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s trips to Russia and China and his country’s position on the EU’s role in Ukraine, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said. Reuters wrote this on Monday, July 22.
Hungary assumed the six-month presidency of the bloc in July. Almost immediately, Orbán traveled to Moscow and Beijing for a peace mission, despite the fact that none of his EU partners knew about it or gave him the authority to do so.
“We will discuss the event and the positions taken by the Hungarian government,” Borrell said, calling them “unacceptable.”
After the talks, leaders will decide how to proceed at a meeting of EU foreign ministers scheduled for late August in Hungary.
Some member countries want the bloc to take a tougher stance towards Budapest. The proposals include a boycott or reduction in the level of participation of ministers especially in the informal meeting in Budapest.
Let’s remember that Orban visited Kyiv, Moscow and Beijing, where he allegedly discussed “peace initiatives” to end the war in Ukraine. After his visits, the politician emphasized to EU leaders the results of his peacekeeping mission and Hungary’s peace proposals.
