After his “peace mission,” Viktor Orban wrote a letter to the head of the European Council. There he “presented a general assessment of his negotiations with the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, China, Turkey and US presidential candidate Donald Trump.”
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban released a report he sent to the President of the European Council Charles Michel on the results of his “peaceful trip” to the Russian Federation, the USA and China. Orban published the corresponding document on his website on Thursday, July 18.
It says “Ukraine and Russia intend to deepen the conflict, and neither side wants to initiate a ceasefire or announce the start of peace negotiations.”
Orban considers the European Union, the USA and China to be global players capable of influencing the development of events. He also advised us to consider Turkey.
According to Orbán’s report, China remains committed to ending the war, calling for a ceasefire and peace talks. But he will only play a more active role if the chance of success of his participation is “close to certain.” According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, Beijing believes that this is not the case.
Donald Trump, according to Orban, is now focused on the elections, and therefore “is not able to change the current policy of the US.” Moreover, foreign policy will play only a minor role in his campaign, Orbán wrote.
“However, I can say with confidence that soon after his election victory he will not wait for his inauguration, but will be ready to immediately intervene in negotiations to end the war. He has reasonable plans,” the wrote the Hungarian prime minister.
He added that if Trump wins, the EU will bear a greater burden in terms of financial aid to Ukraine.
Orbán called on Michel to “find a window of opportunity with a strong moral and rational basis to start a new chapter in our politics.”
In particular, Orban proposes to create the conditions for a temporary ceasefire and/or the start of peace negotiations, especially by resuming direct diplomatic contacts with Russia.
As reported, Orban sent a letter to Michel, in which he gave a brief assessment of the meetings with the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, China and Turkey, as well as former US President Donald Trump, and also added his proposals for consideration.
In particular, the Hungarian Prime Minister proposed the continuation of diplomatic relations with Russia and holding negotiations with the PRC about a “peace conference.”
