NBC News reports this, citing the White House.
In a statement, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden tested positive “following his first event in Las Vegas.”
He has been vaccinated and boosted and has mild symptoms, she said.
He will return to Delaware, where he will self-isolate and continue to perform all of his duties in full during that time. The White House will provide regular updates on the president’s status as he continues to perform all of the duties of his office while in isolation, the spokesperson added.
After his trip to Las Vegas, Biden was scheduled to travel to Delaware.
Biden was tested after he developed upper respiratory symptoms, Biden’s doctor said in a statement released by the White House. Biden’s symptoms included:
- runny nose;
- dry cough;
- “general malaise.”
His doctor said he had already taken his first dose of Paxlovid, a drug designed to reduce the chance of hospitalization or death.
Biden has no fever and his breathing rate is normal, the doctor said.
I tested positive for COVID-19 this afternoon but am feeling well and thank you all for your well wishes, Biden’s official X social media page says. “I will be in isolation until I recover, and in the meantime I will continue to work to get the job done for the American people.”
Biden, 81, and his 78-year-old opponent in the current presidential election, Donald Trump, have both had COVID-19 before. Biden last tested positive for the coronavirus in 2022. Trump tested positive in 2020.
