The direct path to peace is the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, insisted the head of the European Council, Charles Michel.
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in response to a letter from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban about his “peace mission,” said that no discussions about Ukraine can take place without Ukraine. It was reported by Reuters.
The politician noted that Hungary’s presidency of the Council of the European Union does not play a role in the representation of the organization in the international arena and the country was not allowed to do so by the European Council.
Michel noted that he considered Orbán’s opinions and proposals, and at the same time drew attention to the fact that the EU’s position on Ukraine was agreed upon by consensus and confirmed at the last leaders’ summit in June.
He also rejected Orbán’s assertion that the EU is allegedly pursuing a “policy of war.” The President of the European Council noted that Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is the victim exercising the right of self-defense. Therefore, according to him, the direct path to peace is the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.
Michel emphasized that no discussion about Ukraine can take place without Ukraine. He said he had sent a letter to all EU member states and would report the letter to Ukraine.
“The EU continues to strive to build broad international support for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on the UN Charter and international law, in accordance with the main principles and goals of the Ukrainian Peace Formula all partners in the matter this, including China,” – summed up the head of the European Council.
As reported, Orban sent a letter to Michel, in which he gave a brief assessment of the meetings with the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, China and Turkey, as well as former US President Donald Trump, and also added his proposals for consideration.
In particular, the Hungarian Prime Minister proposed the continuation of diplomatic relations with Russia and holding negotiations with the PRC about a “peace conference.”
