Ri Il-gyu worked in Cuba for nine years, but abruptly left his position in November 2023. He later explained to the media that he was disappointed with the DPRK regime.
A North Korean diplomat who worked at the embassy in Cuba fled to South Korea with his family. The incident took place last year, but it only came to light now, after talking to the media, reports NK News.
After the publication of an interview with the diplomat, Seoul intelligence confirmed the diplomat’s escape.
It is noted that a high-ranking official named Ri Il-gyu worked in Cuba for nine years, but suddenly left his position in November 2023.
Ri explained that he was disillusioned with the DPRK regime. Corruption in the Foreign Office and the fact that the authorities denied his request to visit Mexico for medical treatment prompted his flight.
He spoke about Kim Jong-in’s disdain for his own Foreign Ministry and the fate of two senior diplomats. Problems arose in 2017 when Kim Jong-in called the Foreign Ministry directly, but neither Foreign Minister Lee Yong-ho nor First Vice Minister Kim Kye-gwan answered.
In particular, the fugitive confirmed that Han Song Reyol was hanged on charges of espionage for the United States.
And North Korea’s foreign minister was sent to a political camp with his family in December 2019 on corruption charges.
Let’s remember that in 2019 it was reported that Kim Jong-un ordered the killing of several diplomats who participated in negotiations with the United States in Hanoi.
