The Russian department stated that the meeting took place “on the sidelines” of the high-level political forum on sustainable development.
According to the terrorist federation’s Foreign Ministry, Peter Szijjarto and Lavrov discussed “the progress of implementing the agreements” that Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban reached in Moscow on July 5. At the meeting, the head of Hungarian diplomacy discussed Ukraine with Lavrov, according to the ministry.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also added that, “despite the extremely difficult international situation,” interaction between Hungary and Russia continues to “develop progressively.”
Meanwhile, European Council President Charles Michel responded to Orban’s letter about the “peace tour”.
European Council President Michel told the Hungarian Prime Minister that he does not have an EU mandate to negotiate the war in Ukraine.
He also rejected Orban’s claim that the EU was pursuing a “pro-war” policy towards Ukraine.
Michel stressed that “no discussion on Ukraine can take place without Ukraine,” and noted that the EU “has consistently sought to build broad international support for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.”
No discussions about Ukraine without Ukraine: the President of the EU Council wrote a letter to Orban – the document is at the disposal of Radio Liberty.
Charles Michel reminded in the letter about the absence of a mandate for Hungary to act on behalf of the association in the international arena. Earlier, the Hungarian Prime Minister informed in a letter about the results of his so-called peace mission: a tour of Kyiv-Moscow-Beijing-Washington-Florida.
Michel also rejected Orban’s claim that the EU was pursuing a “military policy”:
Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is the victim, which is exercising its legitimate right to self-defense.” The most direct path to peace, according to a high-ranking EU official, is the withdrawal of Russia’s troops from Ukraine.
