Ukraine itself decides when, how and in what form to hold discussions and conduct diplomatic negotiations. This decision is not for the United States or other countries that are not parties to the conflict. Washington will support the Ukrainians if they choose this path. This was stated by the press secretary of the US State Department Matthew Miller during a briefing.
We have always believed that decisions on diplomacy around this conflict should be made by Ukraine, where Ukraine is at the wheel. And so when they – if they want to invite Russia to that summit, of course, we support it, – he said.
At the same time, the State Department representative added that the US has always supported diplomacy when Ukraine was ready for it. Miller also stressed that “it was never clear that the Kremlin was ready for real diplomacy.”
Recall that the day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kyiv plans to prepare a plan for the Second Peace Summit that will include, among other things, all 10 points of the peace formula. The peace plan for ending the war should be ready by November 2024.
Zelensky said that he would like to see representatives of the Russian Federation at the Summit.
