The decision was made “in light of recent events related to the beginning of the Hungarian presidency,” the European Commission explained.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen canceled the College of Commissioners’ visit to Hungary and adjusted the level of representation at EU Council meetings under the Hungarian presidency. It was announced on Monday, July 15 at social networks X European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer.
“In light of the recent developments surrounding the start of the Hungarian Presidency, the President of the European Commission has decided that the European Commission will be represented at senior civil servant level only during the informal meetings of the Council. The visit of the Collegium in the ruling country will not take place,” the statement said.
In June, Hungary took over the Belgian EU Presidency. Since then, Prime Minister Viktor Orban has made unrelated visits to Kyiv, Moscow, Beijing and Washington. Orban himself called his trips a “peace mission,” during which he discussed with the leaders of the countries the terms of peace between Moscow and Kiev.
A group of EU leaders criticized Orban’s visit to Moscow and floated the idea of drafting a joint letter expressing outrage at Orban’s “unauthorized foreign policy attacks” during his country’s presidency.
In addition, it is known that representatives of EU countries have decided to boycott the meeting of European foreign ministers in Budapest, which will take place on August 28-29.
