From 2:00 pm until the end of the day on July 13, three stages of shutdowns will be applied.
Currently, restrictions are applied in the volume of two queues simultaneously, the company reported. The reason for the increased restrictions is the abnormal heat and higher than expected consumption levels.
What is a queue?
Consumers of each region that are not included in the list of critical infrastructure facilities are divided into 6 queues. A queue is a group of household consumers and businesses that consume a certain number of megawatts. Consumption in the regions differs in volumes, since it depends on the level of consumption of critical infrastructure and the number of industrial enterprises that import more than 80% of their consumption (they cannot be disconnected, according to the Cabinet of Ministers decree).
HOW IS CONSUMPTION LIMITED IN TURN?
The number of queues to be moved in all regions at the same time is determined by the Ukrenergo Dispatch Center to compensate for the energy deficit in the system. Deficit is a shortage of electricity in the system when the consumption level significantly exceeds the volume of electricity produced by Ukrainian stations and imported from the EU. In order to avoid a large-scale emergency, the Ukrenergo Dispatch Center must equalize (balance) the consumption level to the level of available energy in the system. Knowing the volume of the deficit, Ukrenergo determines the number of consumer queues that must be disconnected by the regional power company in each region at the same time.
The length of the queue, which queue (group of consumers) to disconnect now, when to switch to another queue, are determined by the regional power companies in each region.
HOW MANY HOURS WILL THERE BE NO POWER?
Conventionally, when regional power companies apply one queue of shutdown schedules, this means 4 hours of restrictions per day, two queues – 8 hours of restrictions, three queues – 12 hours of restrictions, four queues – more than 12 hours of restrictions.
ATTENTION! How to distribute this load during the day, what will be the queue length – is the responsibility of the regional power companies. It is the regional power companies that form the schedules for each region. “Ukrenergo” determines only the number of queues that all regional power companies in the country must simultaneously disconnect.
For information on your hourly outage schedule, see the official websites of the regional power companies in your region and the city of Kyiv, and their pages on social networks.
HOW CAN THERE BE NO LIGHT FOR 12 HOURS IF YOU SEE THAT THERE ARE THREE LINES OF WORK FROM 16:00 TO 18:00 (FOR EXAMPLE)?
When three stages of power outage schedules are in effect for the entire day, this means that you will have a total of 12 hours without power on that day.
If, for example, three shutdown queues operate for several hours, then for power engineers this means that a larger number of consumers are limited during this period. But we emphasize once again: the duration of the queue and its switching are determined by the regional power company in each region.
WHAT ARE UKRENERGO AND OBLENERGO AND WHAT DO THEY RESPECT?
NEC Ukrenergo is the state operator of the energy system of Ukraine (transmission system operator).
“Ukrenergo”:
- transports (transmits) electric energy through high-voltage main networks with a voltage class from 750,000 volts to 220,000 volts from power plants to regional power company networks;
- monitors the balance between the energy produced by all Ukrainian power plants and the level of consumption in the country.
Regional Power Company:
In each region there is an operator that distributes electricity from the Ukrenergo network to consumers through networks with a voltage class from 110,000 to 220 volts.
Ukrenergo does not supply electricity directly to consumers, does not determine the addresses of consumers in queues, and does not create shutdown schedules in any region. These are the functions of the regional power companies.
WHY RESTRICTING CONSUMPTION?
The main reason for the hourly shutdown schedules is the aftermath of eight missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian power plants by the Russians since the beginning of this year. The losses in the Ukrainian power system exceed 9 GW of capacity. This capacity is equivalent to the peak consumption of the Netherlands or Finland in the summer.
The power deficit in the system is also affected by the increase in consumption due to the summer heat. For example, on Tuesday, July 9, consumption increased by more than 5% compared to Monday, July 8.
So, when the lights come back on, please do not turn on powerful electrical appliances at the same time. Limit the use of air conditioners if possible.
