The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the safety of nuclear facilities in Ukraine, including the temporarily occupied Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. This is stated on the UN website.
The document was supported by 99 votes. Nine countries voted against: Belarus, Burundi, Cuba, North Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua, Russia and Syria. Another 66 states abstained.
The resolution demands that the Russian Federation immediately withdraw military and other unauthorized personnel from the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant and immediately return the plant to full Ukrainian control for the plant’s safety.
The Ambassador of Ukraine and Permanent Representative to the UN Sergei Kislitsa noted that the Russians deliberately built the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant as an element of their military strategy, and emphasized: the consequences of the incident at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant will be disaster not only for Ukraine, because radiation knows no borders.
Kislitsa added that the document fully supports the mandate of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and reinforces the importance of the seven indispensable pillars of nuclear safety defined by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
In response, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Dmitry Polyansky, called the resolution “harmful, highly politicized and has nothing to do with nuclear safety,” and also accused Ukraine of allegedly posing a threat to nuclear security and “carrying out attacks on Zaporizhia NPP related to it.”
It was previously reported that as a result of the ongoing Russian occupation, the situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is deteriorating, and with the return to Ukrainian control, it will take years to resume and restart it.
Ukraine is closer to de-occupying the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant after the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland. President Vladimir Zelensky said this.
