The Dior Prize supports creativity and the artists of tomorrow by rewarding a young photographer or videographer. This year’s theme Face to face was offered to the thirteen finalists and it was Chia Huang, born in 1990 in Taiwan, who won for her series. Silence speaks. The photographer, a student at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, built it around two autistic boys who live alone with their father in Taiwan and whom she followed for six months. Covered in their silence, the two models express themselves through very expressive sketches. The photographer initiates a dialogue with them through a creative gesture to “document the silent voice behind their being.” The 7th edition of this prize, created by Christian Dior perfumer, was chaired by photographer Brigitte Lacombe, flanked by Julie Jones, art historian at the Center Pompidou Photo Studio, artist Laurent Montaron and Peter Phillips, Dior’s director of makeup creation and image. Meanwhile, Maya Hoffmann, director and founder of the Luma Foundation, and Simon Baker, director of the European Parliament in Paris, resumed their roles as jurors this year. AM

Kokoko, the voice of Kinshasa!

Kokoko music collective. for their album release Butu.
Javier Thomas.

From the first notes of the Kokoko album, we are immersed in a sonic and visual atmosphere that recreates the excitement of the streets of Kinshasa. All the senses are engaged when listening to this magnificent symphony of horns, voices, bells, cars and distantly inspiring melodies. Each sound of Kinshasa has been selected by Kokoko! by the band and rearranged with a musical score of amazing energy. Hailing from the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, this music collective in the style of the famous African artist Cheri Samba recovers the country’s deep and intricate roots. Kinshasa’s experimental creativity has always accompanied Congo’s turbulent political history, spawning groups such as TPOK Jazz that marked the 1950s. perpetuates this legacy and breathes new life into it. Fongola, the first studio album of this variable geometry collective, formed in 2016 by French producer Debrut, was already a worldwide success. Radical, melodic and DIY, Butu is interspersed with wild rhythmic scans produced by electronic drums, bass drums, and homemade instrument beats. The singing voices seem to come from distorted speakers and Kokoko. radiates an infectious energy in a frenzied atmosphere. PG:
