Ukraine will soon become part of the EU roaming space, which will provide a more stable and long-term roaming solution.
The European Commission welcomed the fifth extension for a further 12 months of a voluntary roaming agreement between 22 European and 7 Ukrainian telecommunications operators, aimed at ensuring that refugees from Ukraine remain connected. This was reported on the EC website on Wednesday, July 10.
Telecommunications operators from the EU and Ukraine signed a joint statement for the first time on joint efforts to ensure and strengthen affordable or free roaming and international calls between the EU and Ukraine in April 2022.
Available calls allow Ukrainians seeking asylum in Europe to stay in touch with family and friends in Ukraine, and vice versa.
The body of European regulators of electronic communications BEREC showed the validity of the agreement between operators in the EU and Ukraine.
Separately, in February 2023, the European Commission proposed to include Ukraine in the roaming zone of the EU. In April of the same year, the Association Committee between Ukraine and the EU accepted the proposal of the European Commission for Ukraine to join the EU rules on roaming.
At the same time, Ukraine worked to fully align its legislation with EU legislation in order to be included in the EU roaming space. The Basic Law was signed by President Vladimir Zelensky on June 18.
At the same time, additional laws still need to be adopted, and after Ukraine reports full harmonization, which is expected in the coming months, the European Commission will assess the adequacy of Ukrainian national legislation.
Pursuant to the positive assessment approved by the Member States and a final decision of the Ukraine-EU Association Committee, Ukraine will become part of the EU roaming space, which will provide a more stable and long-term roaming solution.
Let’s recall that in May the Verkhovna Rada in the second reading adopted a bill on a single roaming zone with the European Union.
