The lawyer says his client turned to the SBU to report that Belarusian special services wanted to recruit him, and he was detained and accused of being an SBU spy.
Some details of the detention of a Belarusian suspected of espionage in Ukraine have been found out. Radio Liberty reported this.
In March, in the Volyn region, the Armed Forces of Ukraine detained a Belarusian on suspicion of spying for Russian special services: the man was collecting information about the placement and movement of Armed Forces equipment and the state of mobilization in the region.
The detainee was born in the Malorytsky district of the Brest region, has lived in Ukraine since 2006, has a permanent residence permit there, he has a family and a minor child.
“My client turned to the SBU to report that the special services of Belarus wanted to recruit him, but he was detained and accused of spying. The SBU, instead of using him as a potential agent in the interests of Ukraine, has put a tick itself and opened a criminal case, ” – said the lawyer of Belarus.
The suspect was arrested on March 18, and when a preventive measure was chosen, the court offered to release the man under house arrest, subject to bail of 1,984,800 hryvnia (about $ 67,000). The family did not have that kind of money, so the man was taken into custody.
It was reported that the investigation was planned to be completed within two months, but investigators applied to the court for an extension until July 18, as they did not have time to conduct some examinations.
According to the lawyer, it is expected that in the near future the investigation will re-apply to the court for further extension of the investigation and detention.
“I can say that unauthorized ways of conducting a pre -trial investigation are being used. Details – if I can prove it, respectively, I can report it,” the suspect’s defender said.
Under Ukrainian law, a Belarusian under the espionage article faces 10 to 15 years in prison with or without confiscation of property.
I remind you that the Security Service of Ukraine has exposed the intelligence network of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of Russia, which is supposed to have assisted the enemy in seizing the country. This includes People’s Deputy Andrei Derkach.
