His plane has already landed in Beijing. The head of the Hungarian government said that he visited the People’s Republic of China on his “peace” mission. The Hungarian prime minister posted a photo of himself after landing at the airport in the Chinese capital on the social network X.
Peace Mission 3.0. Beijing, he noted.
Orban was probably referring to his so-called peace initiative to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said that Chinese leader Xi Jinping is scheduled to meet with Orban on July 8. According to Xinhua, it will be for in-depth discussions “on issues of mutual interest.”
Recall that last week Viktor Orban visited Kyiv and met with Volodymyr Zelensky, after which the Hungarian prime minister went to Moscow to meet with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. After that, he said that the positions of the parties were “very far apart.”
The American Institute for the Study of War believes that Orban’s efforts to push the conflicting parties toward negotiations are likely part of his ongoing efforts to shift Europe’s focus to discussions about peace talks, rather than discussions about military support for Ukraine.
