The new rules stipulate that EU member states must fill storage facilities to 80% capacity before November 2022, and up to 90% in subsequent years.
The EU has approved a new Regulation on gas storage, which obliges to fill gas storage facilities by 80% before 1 November. This was reported by the European Commission.
“In the face of the threat of supply disruptions from Russia, the EU Gas Storage Regulation requires that Europe’s gas reserves be replenished before the start of winter, and their management be protected from outside interference,” said the statement.
In particular, the new rules stipulate that EU member states must fill storage facilities to 80% capacity before November 2022, and up to 90% in subsequent years.
Member States without storage infrastructure must agree on bilateral arrangements to store sufficient quantities for use in neighboring countries in the spirit of solidarity.
It noted that gas storage facilities would be considered critical infrastructure, and all storage operators in the EU would have to undergo a new certification process.
Recall that Russia has a limited supply of gas to 12 countries in the EU.
The EU called Gazprom’s actions a fraud.
