Alliance members will make further announcements in the coming days about strengthening air defenses and increasing the number of munitions.
Even before the summit in Washington, NATO plans to make a decision on providing additional air defense systems and transferring more ammunition to Ukraine. This is what Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview with CBS.
He noted that all members of the Alliance agreed to increase aid to Ukraine – both in the form of new military training and in the form of long-term commitments.
“I also hope that before the (NATO – ed.) summit, which starts next week, the members of the Alliance will make new announcements about strengthening the air defense and increasing the number of ammunition,” said Stoltenberg.
The Secretary General of the Alliance also added that NATO will take over the provision and coordination of security assistance to Ukraine. A command with logistics centers will be created in Germany, where equipment for the training of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be placed. The Secretary General emphasized that “this will be a good and important outcome of the summit, which will provide a stronger basis for our support for Ukraine.”
“The main task of the Alliance is to ensure the success of Ukraine. This is a prerequisite for the country’s future membership in NATO,” said Stoltenberg.
He also noted that NATO and its allies want peace and the only way to achieve it is to convince Russian dictator Vladimir Putin that he cannot win on the battlefield.
“He (Putin – ed.) must sit down and make a decision where Ukraine will prevail as a sovereign, independent state in Europe. The only way to convince Putin that he will not win on the battlefield is the support of military for Ukraine from abroad. Therefore, a long-term negotiated solution for Ukraine, which requires its military support,” Stoltenberg said.
It was previously reported that Ukraine expects from the upcoming NATO summit in Washington on July 9-11 to strengthen its defense capabilities and make significant decisions on membership.
Let’s recall that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed hope for Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance in the next 10 years.
