During the eruption, the volcano emitted a plume of lava and a five-kilometer column of ash. This was reported today, July 7, by the Italian agency ANSA.
It is noted that the ash and lapili (small pieces of lava that hardened in flight) ejected by the volcano resembled a very tall column.
Ash fell over Etna’s neighbour Catania, but the airspace around the Sicilian city’s airport was not closed, as has been the case during some recent eruptions.
The volcano also erupted with a fresh flow of lava.
Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said it was the latest “paroxysm” in a new phase of Etna’s volcanic activity that began last year. The INGV recently said it had found the volcano’s “heart” fueling its activity and that “the energy inside the volcano is growing.”
