Viktor Orban, the Hungarian prime minister, may want to blow up European support for Ukraine.

Orban continues to present himself as a potential mediator to end the war in Ukraine, despite Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s refusal to mediate or negotiate seriously. It is possible that the Hungarian leader is seeking to redirect Western attention to possible peace talks over Russia’s war against Ukraine, according to a report by the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
In particular, on July 5, Newsweek published an article by the Hungarian Prime Minister, in which he accused NATO of choosing conflict over peace. Orban emphasized that the North Atlantic Alliance was created precisely to maintain peace.
Orban’s efforts to push for negotiations are likely part of his ongoing efforts to shift Europe’s focus to discussions about peace talks rather than discussions about military support for Ukraine, ISW notes.
The Institute’s experts point out that Orban is constantly trying to undermine the EU’s efforts to provide military assistance to Ukraine.
Let us recall that after visits to Kyiv and Moscow, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that the positions of both sides regarding the bloody war unleashed by Russia are “very distant.”
