These African countries have recently worsened relations with the Russian Federation.
The military leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger at their first summit in Niamey declared their “irrevocable rejection” of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and announced the creation of a confederation of Sahel states (AES ). The leaders of these countries reported this on Saturday, July 6, on X (Twitter). This information was also confirmed by France 24.
In particular, the military leader of Niger, Abdurahmane Chiani, who was in talks with junta leaders from Mali and Burkina Faso, said that the countries “irreversibly” left the West African ECOWAS bloc and intended to build “a community of sovereign citizens far from the control. of foreign states. A community of peace, unity, based on our African values.”
Burkina Faso’s military leader Ibrahim Traore said that “this continent has suffered and continues to suffer from the fire of the imperialists. These imperialists have only one cliché in their heads: ‘Africa is an empire of slaves.'”
It is indicated that the Alliance will also seek ways to develop closer economic ties, in particular, with the aim of creating a common currency.
In addition, the leaders of the three countries turned to Russia for military assistance.
Earlier, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger expelled French troops from their territories. They were in the countries as part of an anti-jihadist mission, and Niger also achieved the withdrawal of American troops from the Air Base. The US will withdraw its troops from Niger on September 15. It is now occupied by the Russian military.
Russian air defense system, weapons and military instructors have arrived in Niger for training.
