Budapest can be “a good tool in the hands of people who want peace,” the Hungarian prime minister said.
The presidency of the Council of the EU does not give Hungary the mandate to promote peace in Ukraine, but the country can be “a good tool in the hands of people who want peace.” Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced this, Telex wrote on July 5.
The head of the Hungarian government spoke about his meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Kyiv this week. Orban said “Europe can do more to move towards peace” but that Hungary, which currently holds the EU presidency, has no mandate to do so.
“Hungary cannot take responsibility for this, we do not have the mandate or equivalent international political weight for this, we do not have enough national (gross) product, our army, etc., but we can be a good an instrument in the hands of God “We can be a great instrument in the hands of people who want peace,” said the Hungarian Prime Minister.
Orbán is convinced that “the big countries will lead the peace negotiations.”
The politician also said that Zelensky was “not enthusiastic” about the idea of peace negotiations and a ceasefire. According to him, “everyone is afraid” that after the ceasefire the other side will take advantage of it.
Let’s remember that on July 2, Orban visited Ukraine for the first time since the beginning of a full-scale war and met with Zelensky. He suggested that the Ukrainian side cease fire and then start peace talks with Russia. This proposal did not find a response in Kyiv.
