The United States is moving more modern aviation to East Asia, where the military-political alliance of China-Russia-DPRK is becoming more apparent.
The US Defense Department said it will deploy 48 F-35A stealth fighters to Misawa Air Base in northeastern Japan’s Aomori prefecture for the first time, as it tries to boost regional deterrence with its key ally. Kyodo News wrote this on Thursday, July 4.
“This move is part of efforts to further strengthen the US-Japan alliance and enhance stability in the Indian-Pacific region,” the US explained.
The F-35As, known as fifth-generation fighters and capable of avoiding radar detection, will replace 36 F-16s.
Misawa Air Base is located near the Tsugaru Strait, an important waterway where Chinese and Russian warships often dock in the Pacific Ocean. Relatively “not far” from here is the main port of the Russian Federation on the Pacific Ocean – Vladivostok.
Japan first deployed the F-35A to Misawa in 2018 to respond to North Korean air incursions and surveillance.
It was previously reported that the United States, South Korea and Japan condemned the cooperation between the Russian Federation and the DPRK.
