Kyiv admits it has trouble accepting a country at war with the Russian Federation into the Alliance.
Ukraine is seeking a commitment that it is irrevocably a member of NATO. Kyiv also expects additional air defense commitments. This was said on Thursday, July 4, by the representative of the country in the Alliance, Natalya Galibarenko, writes Politico.
“We and the allies want to solidify Ukraine’s irreversible path to NATO membership. We are not asking for anything unusual,” he said.
He noted that Kyiv recognizes that it is problematic to accept a country at war with Russia into the Alliance. In addition, Ukraine does not control all of its territory. However, as he stressed, Ukraine is already counting on additional air defense obligations.
Politico writes that some countries, such as the United States and Germany, are “cool” about a quick membership proposal, while others closer to the front line with Russia want Ukraine’s status in NATO’s future is clearly spelled out.
According to Galibarenko, Ukraine understands everything, and therefore concluded security agreements with individual countries. But the goal remains the same – NATO.
“We made it clear at different levels that the invitation will not disappear from our agenda,” said Galibarenko.
It was previously reported that at the NATO summit in Washington next week, Ukraine will be offered “concrete means” to speed up its future membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.
