Self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko released 10 Belarusian political prisoners this week. This was reported by the human rights center Viasna.
“On the morning of July 4, human rights activists learned of 10 political prisoners who were released on July 3 under amnesty,” the human rights center said.
Among them were three women and seven men. Among these people, Grigory Kostusev, who suffered from oncology, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Some political prisoners were released on pardon, and not after amnesty. However, Kostusev was released under an amnesty, it was confirmed to human rights activists by relatives of the political prisoner.
Human rights activists note that the 67-year-old chairman of the Belarusian Popular Front party, Kostusev, has been kept behind bars for more than three years. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was later diagnosed with cancer.
Lukashenko, in his official speech on July 2, announced the release of several political prisoners.
“Do not be surprised if in a few days the seriously ill people will be released, as they say, those of us, who did not have time to escape and are in places not too far away that have been destroyed and destroyed in the country in 2020 these are really seriously ill patients, mainly with cancer diseases,” said the then formal head of the Republic of Belarus.
As of July 4, 1,407 people were identified as political prisoners in Belarus, Viasna said.
