After their surrender, more than 110 captured Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers were executed in places of detention, including Olenivka. This was stated in an interview with the Ukrinform agency by the head of the Department for Combating Crimes Committed in Armed Conflict, the Office of the Prosecutor General, Yuriy Belousov.
He noted that it is difficult to investigate such crimes because there is no access to the relevant territory, and sometimes even to the bodies of the deceased.
But there are different technologies that allow us to document as much as possible what happened, even without access, Belousov noted.
Thus, according to Belousov, in relation to the terrorist attack in Olenovka, which took place on July 29, 2022 and claimed the lives of more than 50 captured Ukrainian military personnel, an examination of the returned bodies of prisoners of war has currently been conducted, hundreds of people have been interrogated – information is being collected both by national authorities and partners from other countries.
In this case, we are careful in terms of certain announcements, because if we make a mistake in the names or departments, we will cast doubt on our investigation, he emphasized. The case is complicated, but we believe that we will be able to identify by name all those who led this. We have a lot of groundwork specifically for this institution.
Work is also underway regarding the circumstances of the cynical murder of Alexander Matsievsky, when, while he was being shot, he exclaimed: “Glory to Ukraine!”
But it is a complicated matter, but we are moving forward, gradually narrowing the circle of who it could be. We believe that there is a prospect, Belousov noted.
