The construction of the business, in addition to Latvia itself, should also be financed by the European Union. Negotiations are currently underway with local authorities.
Latvia will build a plant for the production of artillery ammunition in the parish of Iecava, which is planned to be launched in 2026. This is what Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds said, Delfi reports.
The plant will annually produce 50 thousand modular powder charges for artillery ammunition.
They want to build the plant on territory owned by the Ministry of Defense, where appropriate infrastructure is needed. Negotiations are currently underway with local authorities.
The construction of the plant will cost approximately 12 million euros, of which 1 million euros will be co-financed by the European Union.
The purchase of raw materials for the production of artillery ammunition costs about 15 million euros per year. They plan to buy raw materials from Italy.
Artillery shells will be supplied, in particular, to the Latvian army.
As we wrote earlier, in 2024 Latvia will allocate six million euros to support infrastructure development in Ukraine. A similar amount of support is planned for 2025.
