The Freedom of Russia Legion and the GUR representative Andrey Yusov held a press conference on July 3 and said that the fire on the ship was started by a Russian soldier, now a Legion recruit with the call sign “Goga”. The Russian served on Serpukhov and helped the Ukrainian special services for a long time, and then carried out the sabotage. Goga was taken to Ukraine along with secret documents.
In 2023, he turned to the GUR I Want to Live project.
“Serpukhov” burned on April 7, when it was moored in the city of Baltiysk (Kaliningrad region). The GUR said that the fire completely destroyed communications and automation, so the ship’s repair would take a long time. No details were given at the time, but a video was published with a plan of the ship and the moment of the arson.
The Serpukhov, a Project 21631 Buyan-M class ship, is a fairly new vessel. It was launched in 2015. It is armed with Kalibr and Onyx cruise missiles, which Russia uses to strike Ukraine.
The Freedom of Russia Legion is a unit in the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, consisting of Russian volunteers. Among them are former military personnel of the Russian army, as well as former employees of the FSB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The Russian authorities have declared it a terrorist organization.
