The Lithuanian authorities will ensure the evacuation of the city within 1.5 days in case of war. They also plan to develop measures to strengthen the defense of the capital.
The mayor of Vilnius Valdas Benkunskas presented a defense plan for the capital of Lithuania in case of war. Among the measures is the evacuation of the city, Delfi reported the previous day.
Road capacity is now calculated. The evacuation will be carried out in six directions.
“We must consider the presence of a river in the city, reservoirs with bridges, or, if they are bombed, it is impossible to drive on them, then evaluate other options,” explained Benkunskas.
If the decision is made to evacuate the city, the task is to do it within 1.5 days, the head of the city emphasized.
Separately, it was planned to strengthen the defense of the capital. Specifically, they will provide a sufficient number of bomb shelters to accommodate 100% of the city’s residents, as city shelters can accommodate no more than 50% of the city’s residents. The number of warning sirens will also increase.
The mayor also presented, the plan includes:
-
building a new training facility for drone operators;
-
activities to prepare for the meeting of the German military brigade;
-
purchase of anti-tank gouges (dragon teeth), steel hedgehogs and concrete blocks for blocking roads.
So far, about 1,900 people have expressed a desire to participate in the preparation of the defense of the capital. The population of Vilnius is more than 556 thousand people.
In the past, the Baltic countries agreed to create a “drone wall” to protect their external borders using UAVs.
In addition, the Lithuanian Armed Forces received a new batch of American-made Javelin medium-range anti-tank missile systems.
It was also reported that Lithuania signed an agreement with the German concern Rheinmetall on the construction of a plant for the production of shells. Its value will be 180 million euros.
