Representative Lloyd Doggett made the public call. This is the first such case in the Democratic Party. CNN writes that some Democratic Party leaders in Congress have similar sentiments, but they want to give Biden the opportunity to make his own decision.
Biden is expected to meet with Democratic governors and congressional leaders today, where his fate is likely to be discussed.
Biden said he “almost fell asleep” during the debate with Trump due to several grueling international trips beforehand.
Speaking at a campaign event in McLean, Virginia, on Tuesday night, Biden acknowledged that the debate against former President Donald Trump, his Republican rival, did not go well.
“I didn’t have the best night, but the point is, I did something stupid. I decided to travel around the world, several times, going through about 100 time zones to debate. I didn’t listen to my team, and when I got back, I almost fell asleep on stage. That’s not an excuse, that’s an explanation,” Biden was quoted as saying by Reuters.
Last month, Biden visited France and Italy on two separate trips over two weeks. After the Group of Seven summit in Italy, he flew overnight to the U.S. to attend a fundraiser in Los Angeles with former President Barack Obama before returning to Washington the next day.
He then spent six days at Camp David preparing for the June 27 debate.
White House officials blame the president’s cold for the disastrous debate.
Biden made no mention of the illness during a fundraiser on Tuesday.
A new Reuters/Ipsos poll found that one in three Democrats believes Biden should withdraw after the debates, but no prominent Democrat would do a better job against Trump than Biden.
The poll also shows that Trump, 78, and Biden, 81, maintained their positions after the debate.
While both candidates remain largely unpopular, Biden became more popular after the debates, and Trump became somewhat less popular.
Biden’s net favorability rating after the debate fell to -20.2 from -19.4 points, among all voters surveyed, not just those who watched the debate.
Meanwhile, Trump’s net favorability rating rose from -20.8 points before the debate to -19.4 points after.
