The sentencing was previously set for July 11, days before the Republican National Convention began.
The sentencing of US presidential candidate Donald Trump in the case of concealing payments to porn star Stormy Daniels has been postponed until September 18. Reuters reported this.
Judge Juan Merchan delayed the sentencing date so he could weigh the former US president’s arguments that he has immunity from prosecution under the Supreme Court ruling.
The new sentencing date means a judge could determine the Republican presidential candidate’s punishment, including his prison term, in the middle of the campaign – less than seven weeks before US Election Day.
The verdict was previously scheduled to be handed down on July 11, days before the Republican National Convention begins on July 15.
It can be recalled that the US Supreme Court recognized that former President Donald Trump has a certain level of immunity from prosecution in the case of the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
As you know, in August 2023, Trump announced four charges in the case of storming the Capitol, namely conspiracy to deceive and obstruct an official investigation.
On May 30, 2024, a jury found Trump guilty of all 34 criminal counts related to withholding information about extramarital affairs.
