There are 65 political prisoners over the age of 60 behind bars in Belarus, many of whom have serious health problems.
Self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has said that some opponents of his regime may be released in the near future. The Belta propaganda agency reported this on Tuesday, July 2.
“Do not be surprised if in a few days people who are seriously ill are released, who do not have time to escape and are in places not too far away that destroyed and destroyed the country in 2020,” he said.
According to him, we are talking about people who are seriously ill with cancer. Lukashenko added that he “treats everyone humanely.”
According to the human rights center Viasna, as of July 2, 1,410 people were recognized as political prisoners in Belarus.
As of May 27, 2024, human rights activists know of at least 254 political prisoners, including 16 people with disabilities, 91 people in serious conditions, 65 elderly people (most of them have serious health problems ), as well as ten people with mental disabilities.
