Israel’s military leadership wants ceasefire in Gaza to free prisoners

Israel’s military leadership wants a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip because it sees it as the easiest way to free Israeli prisoners.

    .

In addition, Israeli military leaders say the IDF needs a ceasefire to rebuild and increase its fighting capacity. The military says the IDF is already short of ammunition, spare parts, motivation and even fighters.

This deepens the rift between the military and Prime Minister Netanyahu, who opposes the ceasefire.

The generals believe that freezing the war would be the best way to free the hostages.

They are also starting to experience a shortage of weapons and want time to prepare their army for a possible war with Hezbollah. And a truce with Hamas could make it easier to reach an agreement with Hezbollah.

This mood of the generals was confirmed by Eyal Hulata, who served as Israel’s national security adviser until 2023 and regularly communicates with high-ranking military officials.

The military’s attitude toward the cease-fire reflects a significant shift in its thinking in recent months, as it has become clear that Netanyahu refuses to formulate or commit to a post-war plan. The decision has essentially created a power vacuum in the enclave, forcing the military to return and fight in parts of Gaza that it has already cleared of Hamas militants, the Times said.

Netanyahu himself is suspicious of a truce that would preserve Hamas’s power, since such an outcome could lead to the collapse of his coalition.

Netanyahu comments on NYT article that Israeli generals are ready for truce in Gaza to eliminate Hamas.

This will not happen. We will end the war only after achieving all our goals, including the destruction of Hamas and the release of all our hostages. The political leadership has defined these goals for the IDF, and the IDF has all the means to achieve them. We are not giving in to the spirit of defeat, not in the New York Times, or anywhere else. We are filled with the spirit of victory, the Israeli Prime Minister said.
