The plant will provide the Lithuanian army with the necessary amount of ammunition, and will also provide it without stopping in case of a threat.
In Lithuania, the country’s Ministry of Economy and Innovation proposed to start construction of a plant for the defense-industrial concern Rheinmetall without special permission. LRT reported this on Tuesday, July 2.
In particular, the 180 million euro ammunition production plant is proposed to be granted the status of a project that meets the urgent needs of Lithuania’s national security and defense.
“The proposal of the Ministry of Economy and Innovation must be approved by the government. After that, the construction of a plant called the Lithuanian Center of Excellence for Ammunition can begin without a special permit – it will need to be obtained before the construction is completed,” points out of publication.
As the ministry points out, Lithuania buys most of its weapons and ammunition on international markets, and therefore becomes dependent on foreign suppliers.
“In order for the Lithuanian army to have continuous access to the necessary weapons and ammunition that meet the needs of the state, it is necessary to ensure that the basic needs of the state are met by business entities operating on the territory of the Lithuania,” the government’s draft resolution said.
Knowing that the German concern Rheinmetall intends to invest more than 180 million euros in a plant for the production of 155-mm artillery ammunition in Lithuania, it should create at least 150 new jobs.
At the beginning of June, an investment agreement was signed with Rheinmetall, the main business of the Rheinmetall group, and Rheinmetall Defense Lietuva, which has been operating in Lithuania since 2018. The land lease agreement with the concern should be signed in the first half of July, and construction will begin in October 2024.
The German defense concern Rheinmetall received a record order for 155 mm artillery shells. Ukraine will receive part of the ammunition
The first workshop of Rheinmetall and Ukroboronprom was opened in Ukraine. In the future, this site will allow the production of new equipment for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
