The EU tightened sanctions against Belarus to limit its ability to participate in Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and to prevent evasion of sanctions against Russia by Belarus itself.
The sanctions imposed by Europe on Belarus are a very important development, as they make it more difficult to avoid sanctions against Russia. This is what Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said on Monday, July 1, Postimees reports.
“Additional sanctions have been introduced in Belarus, which are best associated with restrictive measures against Russia, it reduces the ability of Russia through Belarus to get access to a number of goods that Russia needs in the field of war of aggression against Ukraine,” Tsakhkna explained.
He noted that there is a long-standing problem due to the fact that, even though the EU imposed large sanctions on Russia, it still received materials necessary for the war with the help of Belarus.
“The new package of sanctions significantly complicates this,” assured the Estonian Foreign Minister.
On June 28, the European Union included the Russian transport company TransContainer, as well as five individuals and legal entities from Russia, on its list of sanctions related to the situation in Ukraine.
On June 24, the EU Council approved the 14th package of economic and individual restrictive measures in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The new sanctions package includes restrictions on 116 individuals and legal entities of the Russian Federation.
It was also reported that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for the first time adopted a separate resolution focusing on the role of sanctions in countering the aggressive war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. It is recommended to expand and strengthen both restrictions on themselves and the sectors of their application, as well as control over the implementation of such decisions.
