A representative of his election campaign stated this in an interview with Politico on Friday.
The United States joined the Paris Agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions in 2015 under President Barack Obama, but Trump reversed the move.
Biden returned the US to the agreement on his first day in office in January 2021
The Paris Climate Agreement is an international initiative to combat global warming, one of the main reasons for which is considered to be the increase in greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
The document was adopted on December 12, 2015 at the climate conference in Paris. The Paris Climate Agreement entered into force on November 4, 2016, following ratification by 55 parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which account for more than 55% of global greenhouse gas emissions. It was joined by 195 countries, of which 186 states carried out the ratification procedure, including Ukraine.
The main goal of the Paris Agreement is to keep the increase in global average temperature within 1.5-2 degrees Celsius above industrial levels.
According to the agreement, its participants undertake to reduce greenhouse emissions in relation to the 1990 indicator through Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
The NGO is determined by the country voluntarily for 5 years, after which it is reviewed and new obligations are adopted. They are declared by the authorities to the international community on behalf of the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The Paris Agreement does not provide for a mechanism for strict control over its observance or for compulsory measures to implement it: the document only grants the right to a commission of international experts to verify the information provided by countries regarding their achievements in reducing CO2 emissions.
