Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of the German city of Essen against the far-right congress. The German publication Bild reported this on Saturday, June 29.
It is reported that a congress of the far-right Alternative for Germany party opened in Essen today, attended by some 600 delegates.
“Since that morning, thousands of demonstrators tried to picket trains, hotels, the meeting hall itself and attacked the police who arrived on the spot, and the delegates were accompanied under the escort of a AfD politician opponents in a bakery from where he was freed by a group of police,” it said in the message.
The publication wrote that due to such incidents, the congress opened half an hour later than planned.
“By lunch, the number of protesters had reached 30,000. Among them were several hundred left-wing radicals who were trying to disrupt the congress by force. The police used tear gas and batons against the demonstrators, some people were detained,” Bild wrote.
Let’s remember that in January large demonstrations took place in Germany against far-right forces and the right-wing populist party Alternative for Germany. Demonstrators held signs that read “Fascism is not an alternative,” “No place for Nazis,” and “Nazis and anti-Semites must be expelled.”
It was previously known that the Alternative for Germany party could be banned in Germany.
