Hungary’s presidency of the European Council will require more diplomatic efforts. Budapest expects regular communication between the leaders of the two countries.

Negotiations between Budapest and Kiev during the Hungarian presidency of the EU Council from July 1 will be active and regular, but Hungary does not plan to provide military aid to Ukraine through the European Peace Fund. This is what the political adviser of the Prime Minister of Hungary, Balazs Orban, said, Suspilne reports.

“On the issue of the European Peace Fund… we do not want to participate in the military support for Ukraine. Because this is the Hungarian position for a long time. We are trying to negotiate with our European partners so that they want to join. But at the same time, we ourselves do not want to get involved”, said the official.

According to him, Hungary supports funding from the European Peace Fund, but the money should be directed to other areas and not to supporting Ukraine.

“Negotiations are ongoing, and this is the reason for the discussion of how to do it so that Hungary can say that our resources are not part of the European Peace Fund directed to Ukraine, but go in two other directions as a technical obstacle, we have to make sure that our European partners want to send their money to the European Peace Fund, to Ukraine, and we don’t want to do that, and it should be done properly,” added the adviser to the Hungarian Prime Minister.

He did not say what exactly President Zelensky and Viktor Orban discussed at the round table at the European Council, but claimed that the dialogue between the countries had intensified.

“From the beginning of July we are taking over the presidency of the European Council. Therefore, it requires more diplomatic efforts on the Hungarian side, even though we have complex and different views on Ukraine, but it is not means we don’t have to talk in this situation, I expect more frequent and more regular communication between the two leaders,” concluded Balázs Orbán.

Let’s recall that during the EU summit in Brussels, the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, met with the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky. They had a short conversation. Judging by the broadcast from the meeting room, Viktor Orban himself approached the President of Ukraine and shook his hand.
