The slogan Let’s make Europe great again goes back to the words of former US President Donald Trump, Let’s Make America Great Again.
The European Commission did not appreciate the slogan chosen by Hungary for the future presidency of the Council of the European Union. Politico wrote this on Tuesday, June 25.
Hungary was elected Let’s bring Europe back to greatness (Make Europe Great Again, MEGA) as the slogan of his six-month chairmanship in the Rada. This slogan is reminiscent of Donald Trump’s campaign slogan when he first ran for President of the United States in 2016 (Make America Great Again, MAGA).
The Vice-President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency, Vera Jourova, gave a sharp assessment of the Budapest line.
“Well, that’s not very original, is it?” – he says.
The Commissioner noted that the Presidency of the Council of the EU should be an opportunity for the Hungarian government to “show that they can serve and perform tasks as an honest broker, which is the role of the Presidency.”
“I hope that something will happen that shows professionalism and that it will be neutral and professional,” Jourova said.
As is known, Hungary, under the leadership of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has been arguing with Brussels for years on issues such as migration and support for Ukraine.
Previously, the European Court fined Hungary 200 million euros for violating EU asylum law.
According to media reports, Hungary is currently delaying seven decisions in Ukraine worth 6.6 billion euros.
